Things may have seemed like they were a bit slow lately because of the holidays, but they haven’t been! There are countless opportunities to get involved so feel free to contact me with questions, as you can take on as much or as little commitment as you want. It may just be agreeing to run a fundraiser at your own school!

Earlier in the year, Sony Music Canada was thinking about donating money to KACH. They agreed to put 1/3 of the proceeds from their Christmas fundraiser event toward KACH which will all go back to the Flemingdon and Thorncliffe Park areas. This is really exciting because it shows, once again, Sony Music’s commitment to the community. The result of this was a donation of over $7,000 to KACH and Food Banks Canada!

Think about getting your parents to do a fundraiser at their work, or, run one at your school! Whether you’re one person running a bake sale or a company as big as Sony donating money like they are, making a difference is making a difference!

Christmas is in 30 minutes! I can’t believe it! Christmas this year will be fun for me and a lot of other fortunate children, but for many kids it is not the case. Not everyone has the luxury of indulging in a whole assortment of the newest video games. This Christmas season will be special for me. Just turning 14, I have had the chance to mature and I now understand the complex dimension of the season of buying, as our commercial brainwashing has taught us. This should be the season of giving. We shouldn’t complain just because we only got the Blue Obey hat and not the Red one just because our parents decided to use that money to save for our educations. We should be grateful for what we have and we should put ourselves out there somehow to support the less needy, to give them a voice when they don’t have one, to make their holiday season a merry one. This Christmas season will be special for me for two reasons. One is that I have found someone who is special to me and I hope stays in my life forever. Two is that I was in a successful holiday show for Danforth Tech, an acting agency is interested in me and me and my good friend Jeremiah are busy and dedicated currently creating an entry for The Sprockets Jump Cuts Film Festival. Maybe I am not bound for fame and fortune when I’m older, but I couldn’t care less with all the great friends and people I have in my life. If I do get that fame, then I will be an activist for the unjust and I will use those added privileges to help out the less fortunate, the people who have the hearts of gold but cry the tears of pain. This holiday season use that power you have to do the right things.

Lisa Chen, a friend from highschool and entrepreneur, started her own make-up line recently. Demand was absolutely crazy – selling all but three tubes of her first product, in the first DAY! For Christmas, she has decided to release a limited edition, Christmas themed, special colour of lip gloss. Half of the proceeds from the Christmas edition will go towards philanthropic efforts – part to KACH, and part to buying food in large quantities for homeless people. Then, volunteers will be going out with the food and distributing it to people in much need.

Equality in our world is something I stand strongly for. Wealth class, color, race, religion or any other differences you may have with other members of the surrounding societies should not influence interaction with those people. We shouldn’t judge who our friends are by the color of their skin. The choices that you make in your life shouldn’t be barred by discrimination or even a doubt because of it. The White Ribbon Campaign is a worldwide campaign that encourages members of our society, especially men, to do something to stop the discrimination of women. We are an ever changing society, one that has become accepting of almost everyone. Every day we get closer to that society where it doesn’t matter if you are gay or not. The White Ribbon Campaign is something very important and should be participated in by EVERYONE. Run a bake sale at your school, talk to your class, make a personal donation and wear the White Ribbon. Make the action that is going to lead to a change for the better.

On November 30th, as part of my school’s Charity and Equity Club, I took part in Free The Children’s Annual “Vow of Silence”. Every day, all across the globe and even right here at home, millions of children are silenced by their denial of basic human rights. These children still have their voice, but their right of expression and freedom of speech is limited in such a drastic way that their voices are practically taken away from them. As children of Canada, we all live in conditions that may not be like the ones we desire in our minds, but we do live with the right of expression, with the right to go to school, with the right to say what we want to say.

As a nation of children united, we can stand up for these children all across the globe, just like us in every way imaginable and raise awareness for these unjust actions being enacted upon our world’s youth, our future. Not talking, texting or using Facebook or other electronic means of communication for a whole day was a very hard thing for me to do and even the most dedicated person out there will find those moments where the urge to talk is unbearable, but regardless I encourage everyone to participate next year! Take the Vow of Silence and participate at a level that you are comfortable at. Regardless, you will be standing up for your fellow human beings, who we should be sharing the world with equally and justly.

Today, November 11th, should hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians everywhere. Remembrance Day represents a memorial for the brave soldiers who died overseas and at home, fighting for our freedom. This day should be a time where our nation reflects upon these events and remember the brave actions and people who fought for what they loved and cared about. But Remembrance Day should not be a day filled with sorrow. It should be a day where we reflect upon how great of a nation we live in and how lucky we are to live in a place where discrimination is not tolerated and freedom can be a song that is sung by all. It should be a day where we share this feeling of peace with those all around us to make sure nothing horrible in our past history ever happens again. So today we ask you to remember someone, somewhere who fought for peace, in any shape, way or form and we ask you to take one small action towards making the world a better place.

As we near the holiday season, it is important that the least that we do for the less fortunate is to spread the word about helping out. In my particular case, I was lucky enough to have the opprotunity to visit Taiwan. I am still enjoying my holiday, but knowing that Canadians are hungry every day and that need for help is urgent, I decided to at least spread the word and show the KACH webpage to my relatives over here. They may not be able to help KACH directly, but hopefully by taking the intitave and spreading the word, I have changed their mindset and hopefully they are ready to help out someone, somewhere. I encourage everyone out there to spread the word about KACH. For example I showed the KACH webpage to my high school’s Charity Club and in turn, their haloween for hunger food drive is donating its proceeds towards KACH. Every small action makes a huge difference in someone’s life. So what are you waiting for? Get active and get involved!

Thanksgiving is a time for being thankful. We should be thankful for the things that we get that we don’t need, but sometimes we forget to be thankful for the things that we take for granted. During Thanksgiving we should be thankful for the food we have, the educations we receive and the loved ones we can share this joy with. But during Thanksgiving there still will be numerous families across Canada that will have to go to Food banks so they can feed their families. To a lot of people across our country that take the yearly turkey dinner for granted, this season’s Thanksgiving should be one where they help out someone, somewhere, so everyone can at least enjoy a nice meal for Thanksgiving. At KACH we try to educate the more fortunate about what can be done to help out the needy. If we can educate everyone and get people involved, there will be at least a few more families that can share that Thanksgiving joy. So this Thanksgiving weekend, take some time to remember what you are thankful about and do what you can to get involved.

Happy Thanksgiving!

On September 27 I got the opportunity to experience something really special. As part of Danforth Tech’s Chequity (Equity and Charity) Club, I got to travel to We Day 2011 and I can tell you it was a very special experience. When I arrived there I was immediately swept away by the enormous meaning of the event. Over 18,000 student leaders and educators had gathered at The ACC to take part in We Day 2011. Over 18,000 kids had gone out of their way to come to The ACC not only to listen to change, but to also be part of that change. The day’s musical acts included City and Color, Joe Jonas and The Kenyan Boy’s Choir with Nelly Furtado, but my favorite part of the day was listening to all the speakers talk about the issues close to their hearts. Speakers like Spenser West and Mary Robison really touched me and even though a lot of what they have been through I have never experienced, they connected to me on a humanitarian level, in the belief that we as a human race should all be treated as equals.

Spenser grew up listening to people say that he could never function as a member of society without the use of his legs. He overcame what those people said and walks beside us every day while planning to climb the largest mountain in Africa. President Mary Robison overcame a time of sexism and discrimination to become the first female Prime Minister of Ireland ever and continues to speak on behalf of numerous causes. We Day was truly a life changing event that really drove up my passion for change and made me want to get involved even more. Whatever your passion is in helping others, you should pursue those passions and make change in your community. We Day was a really fun day and hey, I love hearing Classified rap. So I encourage you to get involved in your school’s Me to We club and maybe next year you too can experience We Day as well!
